Sur-Del Squadron's Port Captain for 2005 is Al Chance. The assigned area of responsibility extends from Tsehum Harbour, near Sidney on
Vancouver Island, north through Sansom Narrows to Maple Bay. Of course, any information required about boating on the Fraser River in the
Surrey area will also be provided.
Al can be reached at 604 581 6381.
What Is a "Port Captain"?
Port Captains are CPS members who stand ready to assist boaters in their area.
Port Captains provide reliable information on the area, and comradeship to visitors. Port Captains keep information on hand that a visiting skipper may request over the telephone, such as:
- Navigation hazards which may not be apparent on current charts.
- Location and telephone numbers of local doctors and dentists who are willing to treat a transient patient.
- Location and telephone numbers of ambulances or rescue squads.
- Location and telephone numbers of mechanics, repair yards, sail repair, marine fittings and marine equipment stores.
- The closest source of provisions, recommended restaurants and motels.
The Port Captains are expected to make fellow Squadron members feel welcome.
Port Captains also participate and assist at reception desks, at District and National Conferences,
to provide information for visiting delegates and their spouses.
Port Captains are, first and foremost, ambassadors for CPS.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Recipients of any information from Port Captains must be made aware that the information is given in good faith and to the best
of their knowledge, and must agree to indemnify and save harmless the Port Captain, and Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, for any
loss or damage that may be sustained as a result of the advice offered.
