Canadian Power Squadron Surdel

SUR-DEL (Surrey - Delta), with over 250 members, including 9 Life Members, is one of 22 squadrons on the Pacific coast, excluding Vancouver Island, which make up Pacific Mainland District, a part of the National body, The Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons comprising a total of 173 squadrons.

Our squardron received its Warrant (official recognition) on April 8, 1974. The founding members were Gordon R.Calam, Commander Charles "Chuck" Farrand, Ernie.S.Fleming, Fred R.Gee, J.J.Jordan, Noel Layfield, Geoff Lewis, Glen A.Redline, William Smith, Harold Stephenson and Richard Webley.

Our mandate, as with all squadrons, is "SAFE BOATING THROUGH EDUCATION" and we actively promote Safe Boating through our many courses starting with BOATING and others such as Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Celestial Navigation, VHF Radio, GPS, and Weather. All courses are held at Frank Hurt Secondary School in Surrey at 13940 - 77th Ave. The BOATING course is a prerequisite for membership to any CPS squadron and is offered twice a year, September to December and January to April. At present the PCOC certification (Pleasure Boater Operating Certificate) is only required for smaller boats and under certain conditions. However, it will soon to be mandatory for all boaters, regardless of the size of boat. The PCOC is part of the initial BOATING course. For registration or more information about our courses please call Joe or Linda Mason at 604-930-4890.

Bridge Meetings (executive meetings) are held on the first Wednesday of every month at the ABC Restaurant on Fraser Highway in Surrey and everyone is invited to attend. However, besides offering courses, we have many other activities. Everyone is encouraged to attend our cruises, parties (Christmas being one) and social events - all to promote camaraderie and a good time as well as safe boating. SUR-DEL socials are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 1930 hours at the Fleetwood Library on 160th and 84th Ave. in Surrey, where you can hear knowledgeable speakers on a variety of subjects related to some aspect of boating. While enjoying refreshments, you can view squadron apparel and items and socialize with other members.

Come take the Courses, enjoy the Socials and join the Cruises. We look forward to meeting you!

The History of our Burgee

The SAILOR CHUCK burgee represents Sur-Del's first "Main Man", Commander Charles "Chuck" Farrand. If anyone ever gave his all to CPS and his own Squadrons, it was Chuck Farrand (deceased 9 April 1994). A CPS Life Member, he served as Instructor and Commander with Royal City, Sur-Del & Pender Harbour Squadrons; he was PMD Commander and also served at National level. In 1985 Bill Herringshaw formalized his existing SAILOR CHUCK design into our Squadron burgee configuration. The familiar sailor-capped, bearded figure had been around Sur-Del for some years on buttons & T-shirts. The burgee, a classic triangle with a red upper half over blue: "Red skies at night, Sailors' delight", over the "Deep Blue Sea" with "SAILOR CHUCK" on a white ground at the mast, was approved by CPS National in 1986.
